Jaques & Son (now known worldwide as Jaques of London) is the most important name in the history of croquet. Founded in 1795, the company is the oldest sports and games manufacturer in the world. While variations of the game existed prior, John Jaques II is credited with inventing the modern, commercial game of croquet.  

Jaques first introduced the game commercially at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. In 1857, John Jaques II wrote and published Croquet: The Laws and Regulations of the Game, creating the very first standardised ruleset.  Because of this, buying a Jaques set means buying from the brand that literally created the sport.
