Antique Tunbridge Ware Box with aristocratic provenance
Antique Tunbridge Ware Box with aristocracric provenance. Veneered with rosewood and 3D tumbling cube decoration made with laburnum, ebony, and oak. With original lining paper and a label of S. F. CUST TUNBRIDGE WELLS referring to the elite family of Custs. It is highly likely to have belonged to Lady Sophia Frances Cust. Lady Sophia was a close friend to princess Victoria, the future Queen Victoria. They frequently visited and stayed in Tunbridge Wells attending local races, promenades and parties. It was probably purchased on one of her trips to Tunbridge Wells or given to her as a present whilst staying there. Lady Sophia Custs family house was Belton House in Lincolnshire.
