George I Cast Iron Fireback circa 1720
A handsome early 18th-century cast iron fireback, dating to the George I period, circa 1715–1725. Of tall arched form, the plate is richly cast in relief with a stylised bird or phoenix surrounded by dense scrolling foliage and floral ornament, beneath an elaborate Baroque crest of further foliate scrollwork. The substantial iron casting has developed a deep, dark surface patina from age and historic use within a fireplace. The slightly softened relief is entirely appropriate for a fireback of this period and gives the piece considerable decorative character. Early firebacks such as this were positioned against the rear wall of an open hearth, both protecting the masonry and helping to radiate heat back into the room.
