Pair of signed 19th century bronze Marly horses
A signed pair by Coustou The “Marly Horses” are a pair of 18th-century marble sculptures by Guillaume Coustou the Elder commissioned for the Château de Marly in France. After being moved to the Champs-Élysées in Paris in 1794 and narrowly escaping destruction, the originals were moved to the Louvre Museum in 1795 and placed in the Cour Marly courtyard, which was renamed in their honor. They were created to replace earlier equestrian statues by Antoine Coysevox and were considered masterpieces of French Baroque and Rococo art.
